SMART - Project

The aim of project SMART is to develop technologies and prototypes for the remote monitoring and analysis of infrastructures within the Portuguese road infrastructure. Selected bridges and tunnels will be monitored using fiber sensors technology. Several deformation and temperature sensors will be applied at those structures in selected critical points. The interrogation of the sensors will be done with a custom designed interrogator powered by solar energy, which is very important for the monitoring of remote structures.

The interrogator sends optical information through the fiber to the structure. The reflected signal is processed locally, giving real time information about the deformation and temperature of the sensors in the structure. This information is then sent wirelessly by GPRS to a remote server. In this way, it is possible to analyze the structure health in real time, while enabling the triggering of alarms when the structure is at a possible danger situation.
